Cheri Beasley was Chief Justice in North Carolina Supreme Court, and apparently she REALLY doesn’t like this ad at all. She has a problem with the claim that her vote set a known child porn offender free. The claim she says is false, concerns James Howard Terrell Jr. who was convicted in 2016 for having a USB drive with lewd images of minors[1]. An appeals court ruled the detective had conducted an illegal search and sent the case back to a lower court[2]. In 2019 the State Supreme Court reviewed the case, and the majority of judges voted that it was an illegal search, overturning the conviction[3]. Due to bureaucratic complications, Mr Terrell wasn’t released until 2021.
If you read the court documents[4], they are very clear that there are images of both fully and partially naked minors (page 4, page 5, page 7) on the USB drive[5],[6],[7]. What the documents debate is whether the detective "illegally searched the USB drive"[9]. Justice Cheri Beasley voted to vacate the conviction of Mr Terrell, so the claim that she did free a known sex offender is true.
Claims that her sentencing and voting records are in line with other Judges, is a diversion that tries to deflect attention away the real claim. Her Judicial record may be in line with other judges, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t soft on sex offenders, it just means other judges are also soft on Sex Offender Crimes.
