OVERVIEW: Newspapers.com
is an online tool that allows you to search through over 20,000 newspapers from the 1700s through the 2000s.
WHAT WE LIKE: Newspapers.com has a really extensive database of historical newspapers, they have large big city newspapers and smaller local newspapers. When you do a search you will see digitized version of the whole page, the article you were looking for will be highlighted. Searching the database is free.
WHAT WE DON’T LIKE: This is a paid service that uses a monthly subscription, the cheapest subscription is $7.95 per month, the most expensive subscription is $19.90 a month. They do offer a seven day free trial, so set a calendar reminder for six if you go this route. There really is no way to get around paying, except for the free trial.
OUR RECOMMENDATION: If you’re doing a lot of research and can justify the monthly subscription price this is a great tool. If you only need to lookup a few articles the monthly subscription is pricey, and you have to remember to cancel. We recommend saving an old Visa Gift you have with a $1-$2 balance, and use that to sign up, this way you don’t have to remember to cancel. We also recommend saving up your searches until you have a few and can justify the expense.
