Tiananmen Square Tank Man Photo - Censored in China
On June 5th 1989 to enforce martial law the Chinese Government sent a tank division to Tiananmen Square to disperse any remainiing protesters. An everyday business man on his way to work, stood defiantly in the way blocking the path of the oncoming tank column. Western media in the country had heard about Unarmed Students Massacred the night before and were broadcasting this moment live. This iconic photo has come to represent the courage of every day people standing up to Government Tyranny and overwhelming opposition for people around the world. Sadly this story doesn’t have a happy ending, a few western journalists tried to locate “tank man” afterwards, most people didn’t want to talk, and the few that did, said he disappeared later that day, and was never seen or heard from again. Some speculate he was sent to prison, but most people believe he was executed for the public embarrassment he created for the Chinese Government. This photo and the Tiananmen Square Massacre Photo are both censored and illegal in China.
